This study presents some results of monitoring the beaches at East of Havana City, Cuba, during February and August corresponding to the rainy and less rainy seasons, respectively. For the bacteriological analysis were carried out 5 samplings in a period of 30 days, the rest of the samples was collected as punctual samples. The results are compared with those obtained in other samplings, specifically with 2004 period and with the requirements in the Cuban Standard NC: 22, (1999). Practically, the whole area showed pollution indicators deteriorated, such as: the permanganate oxidability value, bacteriological indicators and hydrocarbons, the last one corresponds to a lightly polluted area by hydrocarbons. The most affected areas were the outlet of the... |

The evaluation of the possible environmental changes due to the anthropic impacts that have happened in the last years in this scenario and the redefinition of areas that suffer affectations were carried up. Any environmental alteration of this ecosystem, either of natural or human origin, can have an important economic and social repercussion. According to the proposed chemical and biological indexes, the waters of the Gulf of Batabanó presented mesotrophic conditions with tendency to the eutrofization in four fundamental areas. In the silts of the Gulf the values of organic carbon and sulphidric acid were characteristic of sediments with high concentrations of organic matter. In the coastal sector N, was determinate high concentrations of sulphidric acid... |

The age-class distribution of the Brazilian flathead Percophis brasiliensis in relation to environmental variables in spring and winter, and the growth of both sexes, were studied in the SW Atlantic Coastal System (SACS)(34°S-31° S). Growth was studied from 1449 individuals (n=853, spring (1998 + 2000), n=596, winter (2004)) to which size (TL), sex, and age were determined. Age was determined considering that an opaque plus a hyaline band (present in the transverse section of the sagitta otolith) represented 1 year of life. The age-class distribution in spring and winter was established through hierarchical clustering and non-metric multi-dimensional scaling (nMDS analysis). This analysis grouped sampling stations (n=109, spring 1998; n=160, winter 2004)... |
